In addition, one round trip airfare will be provided by Sir Ed and June Hillary through the Himalayan Trust for the scholarship recipients. Basic travel/medical insurance for scholarship recipients are also being provided.

The steering group of the Mingma Norbu Sherpa Memorial Fund is seeking donations to reach its $450,000 target.  It will be held by WWF-New Zealand as an endowment fund which will yield sufficient funds to support a student annually in perpetuity.  The fund will be administered by a small steering group including Dave Bamford, Director of Tourism Resource Consultants, Bruce Jefferies of IUCN/World Commission Protected Areas (WCPA), David Simmonds, Professor of Tourism at Lincoln University, Lisa Choegyal (Nepal) and Chris Howe, Executive Director of WWF-New Zealand, along with chair of the fund, Jo Breese.

This scholarship is intended to support young individuals from the Himalayan mountain regions  who are committed to the future of environmental protection and sustainable natural resource management in their respective country.  The fund has been set up to give young conservation leaders the opportunity to follow in Mingma's footsteps and continue his life's work.

Plus Two Scholarship Program

In Nepal, public schools only go up to the tenth grade.  After the completion of 10th grade, all students have to pass the “School Leaving Certificate” exam in order to “graduate.”  For those who want to, or rather can afford further education, they can pursue 11th and 12th grade in private schools. For children in the villages, particularly in remote mountainous regions, it either means education stops at the 10th grade, or students must find funding to pay for a private school in the city. The Greater Himalayas Plus Two Program will fund one student each year from a remote Himalayan community who is interested in pursuing the 11th and 12th grade in any field of studies. Priorities will be given to students with financial needs and from rural mountainous regions.

Plus 2 Scholarship Program for 2008

NimaThe First student to benefit from this scholarships scheme is Mr. Nima Gyalzen from Khumjung village. His father is a trekking guide, very much a seasonal job and mother is just a house wife.  Nima obtained high marks in his SLC examination from Khumjung High School in 2008.  He is one of the top ten students in his batch.

Nima is studying Hotel Management at Reliance International Academy in Kathmandu, Nepal. He felt hotel management is an important area that will teach him skills and management for eco tourism management in the Everest area and can provide him with an opportunity for employment upon completion of his study.

The Greater Himalayan Foundation scholarship amount is Rs. 6,000 per month  which is approximately US$ 80.  This provides him with tuition, accomodation and a small living stipend.  Nima lives in a rented room shared with his friends in Kathmandu and the students cook their own meal.

We hope he will be a successful student and proves to be a role model for future GHF scholarship students.
